Designing dashboards that tell the truth
Dense data is easy to make pretty and hard to make honest. A few principles for analytics UIs that respect the reader.
A dashboard's job is to help someone decide something. If it looks impressive but leaves the reader guessing, it has failed.
Lead with the one number that matters, give it room, and let everything else support it. Hierarchy is the whole game.
Restraint with color keeps meaning intact — reserve your accent for the thing you actually want noticed.
Finally, design the empty and error states first. They're where trust is won or lost.
